Diamond Mountain
Diamond Mountain AVA is a Napa Valley hidden gem and named after the volcanic crystals found in its soil. Wedged in between the Sonoma county line and Hwy 29, the Diamond Mountain District begins at 400 ft elevation and lies among a petrified forest. Encompassing 5,000 acres, only about 500 are planted with grape vines, the rest is just too steep.
Located at the northern tip of Napa Valley, nearly as far north as Calistoga, Diamond Mountain is protected from the Pacific by the Maycamas mountains, perfectly situated for hot Napa days. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are the primary varietals grown in Diamond Mountain District, the warm days and cool nights paired with arid rocky soil produce incredibly complex and full-bodied award-winning wines.
The majority wineries on Diamond Mountain are either open by appointment only or are entirely private. Count yourself lucky if you do manage to get an invitation to visit at this secluded Napa Valley district, since most producers live on their properties you're literally be wine tasting at their home.
Looking for a break from wine tasting? The Boethe Napa Valley State Park, which is located at Diamond Mountain AVA's southern border offers camping, picnicking, swimming and hiking. The visitor center offers a Native American plant garden and a peek at the original inhabitant's, the Wappo tribe, lifestyle.
